Ei Arakawa (*1977, Fukushima) est un artiste performeur queer américain né au Japon et basé à Los Angeles depuis 2019. Pour créer ses expositions et ses performances, il instaure souvent des collaborations enthousiastes avec d’autres artistes, leurs œuvres, des historien.nes de l’art ou le public. Celles-ci prennent la forme d’imitations, de pastiches, de répliques lo-fi ; autant d’attitudes et de formes décomplexées par lesquelles l’artiste rejoue l’héritage des formes artistiques, le potentiel transformateur des architectures institutionnelles et des systèmes organisationnels qu’il traverse.
Pour créer Don’t Give Up, trois peintres américain·e·s vivant·e·s (Nicole Eisenman, Laura Owens, Trevor Shimizu), ainsi que deux autres défuntes (Mary Cassatt, Alice Neel) ont instruit Ei Arakawa sur la difficulté d’être parent et artiste en même temps. A Friart, Cette préparation psychique à devenir parent queer donne naissance à une installation labyrinthique en carton dans laquelle on croise des tableaux chantants. Accompagné par la compositrice de Los Angeles Celia Hollander, l’artiste crée un opéra pour exorciser ses insécurités : une trame dans laquelle le portrait et la situation, l’art et la parentalité cherchent à se réconcilier.
