Symbolic associations of the power of simulation, Dis&Appearance has an irresistible and ambiguous propensity to project us into a world that subtly mixes the real and the imaginary. Born of a virtual representation of reality, these works finally determine and fine-tune reality by modifying and circumventing it. The artists featured in this exhibition give us access to worlds that are fantastic, absurd, intimate, funny or violent. Sprung from the memory or the imagination of their authors, these realms caught in an ongoing metamorphosis introduce us to certain aspects of our relationship with the world as such. Presenting a decade or so of new productions and collaborations, Fri-Art showcases a significant selection of art works that bear witness to the vital strength of 2D and 3D installations and animations. These works open on a world expanding and shrinking, a world in which spatial and temporal notions are elastic. The world in which we live aims to compete with nature, and finally to reproduce it. The chimaeras of art often question its capacity for self-renewal. The transdisciplinary faculties of animated works, notably involving the cinema, various areas of science and the digital world, endow art with a process-like character that is “in progress”, association-based and akin to human memory. It may be that the mental game they enter upon and their unbridled imagination let them feed upon and approach the concrete world in order to find a stronger hold on reality.
